Married Filers, The Choice Is Yours

Some married couples assume they have to file their tax returns jointly. Others may know they have a choice but not want to rock the boat by filing separately. The truth is that there’s no harm in at least considering your options every year.

Granted, married taxpayers who file jointly can take advantage of certain credits not available to separate filers. They’re also more likely to be able to make deductible IRA contributions and less likely to be subject to the alternative minimum tax.

Your health insurance company may request that you provide the Social Security Numbers (SSNs) for you, your spouse, and your children covered by your policy. This is because the Affordable Care Act requires every provider of minimum essential coverage to report that coverage by filing an information return with the IRS and furnishing a statement to covered individuals. The information is used by the IRS to administer — and by individuals to show compliance with — the health care law.

Justice Is Served – 70 Arrested, 750 Detained In India On IRS Phone Scam Fraud Charges

Here is some sweet justice being served to those awful phone scammers that call our phones everyday with their nonsense. 70 call center workers (or should we say scammers?) were arrested following a tipoff, according to The Guardian. Police raided call centers around Mumbai, India and around 750 call center workers were detained after an ongoing investigation into what kind of business was being conducted in these establishments.

How to Lower Taxes for Self Employed Business Owners

When you are a small business owner, your business profits are taxed to you at federal rates as high as 39.6%. Plus add self-employment taxes, which in 2016 will amount to 15.3% of the first $118,500 of your net self-employment earnings plus 2.9% of any earnings over that amount. Then there’s an additional 0.9% Medicare surtax on earnings in excess of $200,000 ($250,000 if married filing jointly).
